Renewal

Hey there,

As some of you are aware, I've been helping out by paying for our website registration for the last three or four years while terrific ZoS Member Belorn has handled the whole link and redirect and hosting stuff (thank you!).

I noted that the ZoSGuild.com URL is redirecting to zealotsofshiverpeak.com, which is the URL we once used exclusively, until certain odd circumstances removed it from the guild's collective control. So the fact is, the registration for ZoSguild.com expires at the end of January. It's $50+ to renew for a year (a lot more than the new registration, I think I used the wrong place ;) ). The point is, I'm just not sure that we need to continue to own that URL in addition to the new one. I'd rather not plunk down the money unless we really need me to do it. :) On the other hand, if people are going to the old URL... well, I just don't know.

Any thoughts on this? Belorn? Frosty? Members?

Thanks!

I asked Frosty via email, but yes, let's check with Belorn.

Thanks, Geist. :)

I think if we start spreading the word now that zealotsofshiverpeak.com will cease to redirect it shouldn't cause too much confusion--certainly not $50 worth of confusion! ;) My only concern is someone else snagging zealotsofshiverpeak.com and impersonating us, which is always a risk when you let your domain name expire.

It is also nice being able to use the much shorter URL in the guild message of the day, but again that isn't worth $50. I say check with Belorn to see if this will break anything and if not, let it expire and we can try to snag it from a different provider once it becomes available. Its a small risk we lose the domain to someone else, and a short term inconvenience but I'm pretty sure you can get domain names for like 10% of that cost now so I say it's worth it.

Yes, $50 is a bit of the very expensive end of domain registrations.

Oki, technical stuff here. Gaile, can you contact networksolutions and ask them for a transfer code (also called an EPP-code). With that, I can take care of the old domain (and pay for it), and keep it for a year or two for as long we feel its useful.

If that don't work and networksolutions is giving you trouble for trying to change registrar, we can just let it expire and try to re-register it after a month or two (that is when it becomes available for registrations again). There are however some risk with this approach, with either a), someone stealing the domain like frosty mentioned, or b), networksolutions keeps it for themselves for the creation of ads and domain hoarding.

also, Merry Christmas and a happy New Year :).

Happy New Year!

If need be, I can pay the $50 for the registration renewal. I'm already paying for the http://www.zealotsofshiverpeak.com domain, and I'm more than happy to do so for http://www.zealotsofshiverpeak.com. :)

I do like the idea of keeping both, especially as Frosty pointed out, it's good for a smaller re-direct link, as well as someone may impersonate us (again), however, whichever way we decide (ie. keep it or not), I think is acceptable.

Cheers!

First of all, you're sweet to offer but I do not want you guys to pick up a penny of the costs. Thanks for the offer, but let me do this for the guild, it's my pleasure!

I'm going to call and ask about the transfer thingie, but I think I'll just renew. If I go for, say, 3 years or more, the cost per year drops. And we all know ZOS is going to be around in 3 years and more, so why not? :D

To be honest, one of the reasons it's so expensive is that I'm paying for the Network Solutions privacy thing. I thought that might be a better idea than using my home address. It's funny when I say something on Facebook like "I'm having a Christmas Tree decorating party" and people ask if they can come. :P I am not sure I want my address "out there" for potential surprise dinner guests.

Anyway, I'll work with Belorn on this and we'll be just fine. Thanks again for your sweet offers to help out! :)

Ok, I renewed with the existing set-up for three years without changes. This saves Belorn the trouble of rerouting, protects our easy link -- zealotsofshiverpeak.com -- and means I don't have to think about it for three years.

Thanks for all the feedback, and we're good to go until 2016!! :D

My pleasure, Frosty. For all that you and other guild members do and have done over the years, this is a teensy-tiny contribution in comparison!

Thank you, Gaile! I don't think I purchased the Network Solutions Privacy thing when I registered zealotsofshiverpeak.com...mainly because I would love to have dinner parties with fellow ZoSians and Guild Warsians alike. :P
